Longest game in Big Ten Tournament history, goes to Buckeyes, 88-81 in 2 overtimes

For the Buckeyes to gain their 26th win of the season they really had to buckle down to earn it. Evan Turner overcoming some turnover problems,  a 20-0 second half run to erase an Illinois lead of 10-points and playing 2 overtimes and surviving Illinois having the last shot to win the game at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime. And not to mention, Ohio State endured two long scoring droughts, more than 7 minutes in the first half and more than 4 minutes in the second half.

Number 5 Ohio State and Evan Turner’s 31 points are in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Golden Gophers who upset Purdue in the other semifinal game.

The 26-7 Buckeyes are trying to make a case for a number 1 seed along with several other top 10 teams who won their conference tournament. And Turner is doing everything he can to make sure it happens for the Buckeyes.

To go along with his 31 points, he grabbed 10 rebounds had 2 assists and 2 steals but on the negative side, he committed 10 of  Ohio State’s 18 turnovers. But he played more than 14 minutes with four fouls and finally fouled out with one minute left in the game.

The Illinois Fighting Illini could’ve been in the championship game themselves if they had converted on one of two possible game winning shots at the buzzer. Mike Davis didn’t get a wide open layup off in time at the end of regulation, and D.J. Richardson missed  a long  jumper after the red lights lit up on the backboard at the close of the first overtime.

William Buford had 22 points and 14 rebounds. John Diebler finished with 14 points, joining the Buckeyes’ 1,000-club. His fourth 3-point goal, just 15 seconds into the 2nd overtime, gave him a school record 273. Jamar Butler, who graduated two years ago, held the previous mark of 272.

19-14 Illinois will have to wait until Sunday evening to see if they will make the NCAA Tournament. They were led in scoring by Evan Turner’s high school classmate and friend, Demetri McCamey, with 22 points; D.J. Richardson had 15 points, and Mike Davis scored 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, one short of Greg Oden’s single-game tournament record of 19.

West Virginia’s entire team won the Big East Championship. But each of his teammates cannot tell a lie, Da’Sean Butler was the one who led them to the promised land of the NCAA Tournament.

Last Thursday, Butler banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift West Virginia to a 54-51 quarterfinal win over the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The senior came through on Saturday, scoring in the lane with 4.2 seconds left as the seventh-ranked Mountaineers beat number 22 Georgetown, 60-58, giving them their first Big East Championship.

The first team all Big-East selection said, “The team’s main concern was not letting down the state of  West Virginia because the fans love us so much with their support”.

Third-seeded West Virginia, the only one of the top four seeds to escape  the quarterfinals without being upset, was making its second championship game appearance. They now go into the NCAA Tournament hoping for a number 1 seeding.

The Cleveland Browns returned as an NFL franchise 11 years ago and their quarterback position has been anything  but stable. It has been like a merry-go-round with 8 different starters since 1999.

This past week, Derek Anderson was cut and they brought in Seneca Wallace who has been a backup QB. On Saturday, they signed veteran Jake Delhomme to a 2-year deal. The 35-year-old, Delhomme was recently cut by Carolina after suffering through his worst season as a professional. He threw 18 interceptions in 2009 and overall had a 58-40 record as a starter and lead the Panthers to their only Super Bowl appearance in 2003.

He is expected to challenge incumbent Brady Quinn for the starting  job.
