Reds reclaim first-place; show they can match St. Louis offensively

compiled from staff and wire reports

Scott Rolen is showing that he is the leader the Reds have needed all along with a young ballclub. Acquired last last season for often-injured, streaky and error-prone Edwin Encarnacion from Toronto, many baseball experts felt the Reds would end up on the losing end of the trade. But instead, he has been a solid teammate and team leader.

Rolen has been a thorn in the side of his old team the St. Louis Cardinals all season.

Rolen homered twice and doubled with four RBI’s in his homecoming in leading the Reds to a 9-8 win Tuesday night over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Johnny Cueto started for the Reds and had location problems. He didn’t strike out a single batter for the first time in his 72-start career. That is rare for someone who throws 93-97 mph. He blew leads of 3-0 and 7-3 before leaving in the sixth inning.

Jonny Gomes’ RBI single and Drew Stubbs’ go-ahead sacrifice fly off Blake Hawksworth put the Reds ahead to stay in the seventh inning after Brendan Ryan’s two-run double put the Cardinals ahead 8-7 in the sixth inning.

Joey Votto homered and had four hits. No one would’ve believed he had missed six-games due to a  sore neck.

The win moves the Reds one game ahead of St. Louis in first place in the NL Central Division.

The key points of the game for the Reds was the backside of their bullpen. Arthur Rhodes struck out pinch hitter Nick Stavinoha with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning and Nick Masset fanned Colby Rasmus with two men on to close out the eighth.

Enerio Del Rosario (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day on Tuesday, finished the sixth and earned his first career victory.

Francisco Cordero worked the ninth for his 16th save.

Former Red Dennys Reyes (2-1) allowed the Reds to go ahead in the seventh and was the losing pitcher.

Dontrelle Willis heads to “new beginning” in Arizona

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Detroit Tigers say they had three teams interested in trading for Dontrelle Willis and the offer from the Arizona Diamondbacks was the best.

Detroit dealt the left-handed pitcher and cash to the D-Backs for right-hander Billy Buckner who will be sent to Triple-A Toledo.

The 28-year-old Willis was designated for assignment on Sunday, giving Detroit up to 10 days to make a move with him. He is making $12 million this year and Detroit acknowledges that they’ll be paying a substanstial portion of his salary.

Willis was 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in eight starts and one relief appearance this season. He is expected to start Saturday night against Colorado in Arizona.

He joins an Arizona team that has been in a slump all season and is ranked last in ERA at 5.89.

The former NL Rookie of the Year, All-Star and 22-game winner with Florida, helped the Marlins towards a World Championship in 2003, but failed to gain any resemblence in two-plus seasons in Detroit.

Nicklas Lidstrom will return to patrol the blueline for Detroit

compiled from staff, wire and Detroit Red Wings news

Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom has decided to return to the Red Wings instead of retire.

The Swedish star signed a $6.2 million, one-year contract on Tuesday instead of retiring at 40.

Nicklas Lidstrom (nhl)

Lidstrom has spent all of his 18 NHL seasons with the Red Wings, winning four Stanley Cups. He is returning for at least one more season to try and win a fifth Stanley Cup ring.

A fan favorite in Detroit, Lidstrom has nine goals and 40 assists for 49 points last season.
