NHL PLAYOFFS: Western Conference

compiled by the staff

Chris Stewart’s shot deflected off San Jose defenseman Rob Blake’s skate and into the net with 50 seconds left in regulation to give Colorado a road win in the opener of their playoff series.

This is a shocking win considering that the Avalanche were the worst team in the Western Conference last season.

The loss was the latest playoff disappointment for the Sharks, who have always made a habit of following up stellar regular season play with early playoff exits. San Jose has lost Game 1 at home in its past four playoff series.

Derek Morris broke a tie early in the third period and assisted on two other power-play goals in Phoenix’s 3-2 win over Detroit in Glendale, Arizona in Game 1 of their playoffs series.

Ilya Bryzgalov (nhl)

Keith Yandle and Wojtek Wolski also lit the lamp and Ilya Bryzgalov  made 38 saves to lift the Coyotes win a playoff game for the first time since April 20, 2002, the last year they were in the playoffs.

Sidney Crosby (nhl)

Erik Karlsson and Chris Kelly scored on power plays in the second period and the Ottawa Senators ignored their underdog tag and surprised the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh, 5-4 in Game 1 Wednesday night.

Sidney Crosby, had three assists but didn’t get a shot on goal until the third period and the Penguins, unprepared for the Senators defensive pressure, were held to one shot during a stretch of 21 minutes and 53 seconds. The Crosby line was shut down by Chris Phillips and Anton Volchenkov.

The Philadelphia Flyers are the number 7 seed in the conference, but they won five of six games against the New Jersey Devils in the regular season. Wednesday night, they beat the Devils again in Newark, New Jersey, 2-1 in Game 1 of the playoffs.

Brian Boucher had 23 saves in his first playoff start in eight years.

Chris Pronger and Mike Richards scored second-period goals, and the Flyers rode their momentum of claiming the last playoff berth on the final day of the regular season in game 1.

Another loss for the hapless Houston Astros

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Houston Astros dropped to 0-8 Wednesday night, with Brad Penny and Albert Pujols combining to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 win over the offensive-challenged Houston Astros.

The Astros remained the lone winless team in major league baseball, mostly because of  a major league-low 14 runs scored. They have scored one or fewer runs five times this year.

If they lose the series finale on Thursday, it would match the franchise-worst 0-9 start in 1983. The Astros, however recovered that year, finishing 85-77.

New Astros manager Brad Mills  held a rare, off-day optional workout Tuesday in St. Louis in an effort to help players relax.

Brad Penny (1-0) allowed an unearned run on three hits in seven innings. Albert Pujols drove in his major league-leading 15th run.

Florida Marlins 5 Cincinnati Reds 3

Jorge Cantu (mlb)

Former Red Jorge Cantu homered, making him the first player in major league history to have at least one hit and one RBI in each of his team’s first nine games, and the Marlins got past the Reds, 5-3.

Cantu’s record dates to 1920, when RBI’s became an official statistic.

Cantu cracked a solo home run in the fifth inning. He entered Wednesday’s game tied with George Kelly of the 1921 New York Giants with at least one hit and RBI in the opening game eight games, based on research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

If you include last season, Cantu has 13 consecutive games with a hit and an RBI, the longest string since Mike Piazza went 15 straight from June 14-July 2, 2000.

Lewis and Cruz lead Texas past Cleveland, 6-2

Compiled from staff and wire reports

Colby Lewis tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts and Nelson Cruz hammered his American League leading sixth home run Wednesday night as the Texas Rangers beat Cleveland, 6-2.

Colby Lewis (mlb)

Lewis (2-0) allowed two runs over 5 1-3 innings. He got the start in place of C.J. Wilson, who came down with food poisoning on Tuesday. Lewis made 37 pitches in the first inning, but got out of a bases-loaded jam and didn’t allow a hit until the third. He gave up three hits and four walks overall.

There was a crowd of 10,071 at Progressive Field, the lowest since the ballpark opened in 1994.
