Indians place versatile Mike Aviles on Medical Emergency List

CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Indians have announced the following roster moves relative to the Major League roster:

Placed INF MIKE AVILES on the Family Medical Emergency List, effective today.

Recalled INF/OF ZACH WALTERS (#6) from AAA Columbus.

Aviles is hitting .288 (15-52) with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI In 18 games for the Indians this season. Players can remain on Family Medical Emergency List for 3-to-7 days.

Walters spent the first three weeks of the season on the 15-day Disabled List with a right oblique strain prior to being activated and optioned to AAA Columbus on April 24. With the Clippers he has batted .239 (11-46) with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run and 9 RBI in 13 games (.333/.457/.790). He has appeared in games at third base (4), second base (2), first base (2), left field (2) and shortstop (1) during his tenure in Columbus.

Reds 1B Joey Votto disciplined by MLB

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire Chris Conroy following the top of the third inning of the Club’s Wednesday, May 6thgame against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Votto’s suspension will be served Saturday during the first game of a doubleheader, when the Reds open up a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Boston’s David Ortiz given on-game suspension by MLB

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire John Tumpane during the bottom of the fifth inning of the Club’s Sunday, April 19thgame against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Ortiz’s suspension had been scheduled to begin tonight, when the Red Sox are to begin a road series against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he has elected to file an appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

The Cleveland Indians announced the club has signed free agent INF HANLEY RAMIREZ (#2) to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

Ramirez, 35, owns a career Major League average of .290 (1825-for-6300) with 374 doubles, 269 home runs and 909 RBI over 1652 games with Boston, Miami and Los Angeles-NL (.361/.487/.848) over his 13-year career. He is the only active player with at least 250 career home runs and 250 stolen bases (281) and is one of just seven active players with 250 homers and more than 1,000 runs scored (1045). He is a three-time National League All-Star (2008-09-10) and captured a pair of Silver Slugger Awards while with the Marlins, finishing in the top-11 in the MVP voting over four different seasons of his career.

He spent the first two months of the 2018 season with the Boston Red Sox, batting .341 (29-for-85) in April with 4 2B, 3 HR and 17 RBI in 22 games (.906 OPS). During his 44-game stint with the Sox, he batted .333 (14-for-42) with an .854 OPS vs. left-handed pitching to bring his career OPS against southpaws to .895. The Samana, Dominican Republic native enjoyed an 18-game, one-month stint in the Dominican Winter League, Nov. 14-Dec. 14, batting .266 (17-for-64) with 4 2B, 3 HR and 10 RBI (.360/.469/.829) for Licey.
