Dayton Flyers offense beats the defense, 58-28 win in annual Spring Game

DAYTON – An efficient, albeit brief performances by quarterback Jack Cook and a big day by running back Tyler Vincent led the offense to a 58-28 win over the defense in the University of Dayton’s spring football game.

The game was scored with either the offense or defense earning points based on outcomes.

Cook played only two series, completed all five passes he threw for 113 yards and two touchdowns, looking as good as he has during the entire spring.  Vincent carried seven times for 111 yards and two touchdowns.  The last score was a 55-yard TD on what was essentially the last play of the game.  Ryan Skibinski (3 catches, 75 yards receiving, 1 TD) and Adam Trautman (2 catches, 38 yards, 1 TD) were the top receivers.

Jack Cook was a perfect 5 for 5 passing

Safety Matt Clifford scored the first points for the defense with a second-quarter interception.

“The game went about the way we thought it would with the talent and experience we have on offense, and what they have been showing all spring.  Jack Cook led us to two scores with big plays from the people you would expect – Adam Trautman and Ryan Skibinski,” head coach Rick Chamberlin said.  ”But I saw some flashes of good things out of our defense.  We know they are young, but we are working to get them ready for that first game.”

As is the tradition at UD’s Spring Game, the next season’s team captains were announced at the pre-game coin flip.  Senior Flyer Andrew Lutgens and redshirt senior tight end Adam Trautman were named 2019 team captains.  Team captains are voted on by the team after the last spring practice, and results are kept secret until Sunday’s coin flip.

Lutgens redshirted his first year on campus, but immediately moved into the starting lineup in 2017.  He has started all 22 games of his college career at “Flyer”, UD’s hybrid defensive back/linebacker position.  Last season he was named First Team All-Pioneer Football League.  He was third on the team in total tackles (68) and solo tackles (37), and he led Dayton in tackles behind the line (10).  He is from Brentwood, Tenn.

Tyler Vincent rushed through the defense for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns

A three-year starter, Trautman is a two-time Second Team All-PFL selection.  He enters his final year as a Flyer 24 catches away from Bill Franks’ career receptions record of 133 and seven TD’s away from Pat Hugar’s 24 receiving touchdowns.  Last season, Trautman had team bests with 41 receptions for 604 yards and nine touchdowns.   The Williamsburg, Mich. native is a four-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.

UD opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Indiana State.  The Flyers’ home opener will be against Duquesne at Welcome Stadium on September 21.
