Blue Jackets shake off bad loss to Calgary; rally stuns Blackhawks (Saturday)

If the Blue Jackets keep following up bad losses with a big win over teams people say they can’t beat, its going to be a long, long season.

On Friday, they had a very bad loss to Calgary, but rallies from two goals down to beat the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center in Chicago.

The 3-2 win stunned the 20,265 in attendance.

R.J. Umberger, Derick Brassard and Antione Vermette scored the Columbus goals while Marc Methot collected two saves and goaltender Steve Mason stopped 30 shots.

Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash had a 20-minute team meeting and said it was a look-at-yourself-in-the-mirror session.

The key point in the game came late in the second period with the Blackhawks up 2-0 and looking like they were cruising to another win over Columbus.

With 35.7 seconds left, Brassard picked up the puck after Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford had blocked aside a shot by Jakub Voracek. Brassard knocked in the rebound for his first goal of the season.

On the faceoff after the goal, Columbus’ Fedor Tyutin was pasted face-first into the boards by the Blue Jackets bench by Chicago’s Troy Brouwer. That vicious check sent Tyutin to the ice, grabbing his neck in pain. Brouwer was given a five-minute major and in that time frame, the Blue Jackets grabbed the momentum with the long power play which carried over into the third period.

The third period had barely begun, 1:33 to be exact, Tyutin put a shot on goal that glanced off of Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson before R.J. Umberger knocked the rebound past Crawford and just like that, it was 2-2.

At the 6:29 mark, Methot shot a puck inside the blue line and shot a slap shot that Vermette redirected past a stunned Crawford and that was your game-winner.

The Blue Jackets had a nice third period putting 20 shots on goal and finished the night with a season-high 40.

Surprisingly, Columbus is 3-0 on the road and 4-3 overall.
