NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forwards Josh Cunningham and Obi Toppin have both earned weekly honors for their performances in Dayton’s 94-90 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday.  Cunningham was named A-10 Co-Player of the Week, while Toppin was picked Co-Rookie of the Week.

Cunningham scored 25 points, grabbed six rebounds and matched his career high with five assists in the win, which was Dayton’s eighth in 13 games.  The redshirts senior co-captain from Chicago made 10 of 14 shots and was also five-for-seven from the free throw line.  Cunningham is just 12 points away from 1,000 in his career (260 at Bradley, and 728 so far at Dayton).

Toppin, a redshirt freshman from Ossining, N.Y., had 22 points for the third time in his young career.  He made nine of 10 field goals in the GSU win, and on his only miss, he grabbed the rebound falling away from the basket and slammed it home with a one-handed tomahawk jam.  Toppin is second in the nation in overall field goal percentage (.733, 77-105).

Cunningham and Toppin are two of the four Dayton players averaging double figures.  Cunningham leads at 16.0, Jalen Crutcher is second (14.1), Toppin third (13.4) and Trey Landers fourth (10.5).  Toppin and Landers are both in the top five of field goal percentage in the Atlantic 10.  Cunningham is shooting .654 (70-107).

The Flyer duo shared conference honors with Grant Golden (co-player) and Jake Wojcik (co-rookie) of Richmond.  Oddly enough, all four could be on Tom Blackburn Court next Sunday when the Flyers and Spiders both open their respective Atlantic 10 seasons at UD Arena.  Game time is 12 noon p.m. ET.
