Fort Wayne, Ind.—The Fort Wayne TinCaps scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to battle back from a 4-3 deficit and defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Thursday night.  The two clubs have split the first two games of the series that will conclude on Friday night.

The Dragons nearly completed a big comeback of their own after trailing for most of the game.  Fort Wayne scored two runs in the first inning and another in the fourth to hold a 3-0 lead.  The Dragons were limited to three hits and no runs over the first six innings, but they started back in the seventh when J.D. Williams started the inning with a single, went from first to third on Reshard Munroe’s single, and scored on an error to make it 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, Dayton’s Hendrik Clementina blasted a solo home run with one out to make it 3-2.  It was Clementina’s 15th homer of the year.  Lorenzo Cedrola followed with a single to center, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Williams’ sacrifice fly to tie the game.  Munroe then belted a two-out triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

Dayton reliever Dauri Moreta pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth inning and went back to the mound for the ninth.  He allowed an infield single to start the inning and then issued a four-pitch walk to put runners at first and second with no outs.  Fort Wayne’s Kelvin Melean then bunted to the side of the mound.  Moreta fielded the bunt, but threw wildly to first base as the lead runner scored to tie the game, leaving runners at second and third with no one out.  Moreta got the first out on an infield pop up, but with the outfield drawn in, Fort Wayne’s Hunter Jarmon connected on a fly ball over the head of the Dragons center fielder, Cedrola, to bring in the winning run and end the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Austin Orewiler worked seven innings, allowing a two-run home run to the second batter in the first inning, and then settled in over the rest of his performance.  He allowed three runs on the night on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts, leaving the game with a 4-3 lead.  Moreta (1-1) was charged with the loss.

The Dragons finished with nine hits including six over the last three innings.  Monroe and Alejo Lopez each had two.  Clementina’s home run was his third in the last six games.
