Urban Meyer placed on Administrative Leave by Ohio State

Ohio State announced Wednesday evening that head football coach Urban Meyer had been placed on paid administrative leave while the university investigated allegations that he knew a former wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Zach Smith had been accused of domestic abuse in 2015.

In a statement released by the university, Meyer said he and Athletic Director Gene Smith had agreed “that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion. This allows the team to conduct training camp with minimal distraction. I eagerly look forward to the resolution of this matter.”

Meyer said last week at the Big Ten Conference Media Days that he had not heard of the domestic abuse accusations until recent days, but a report on Wednesday suggested that Meyer had known about the accusations for far longer. The allegations have been made by Courtney Smith, ex-wife of Smith. She claims that the Buckeyes coach had to have known because she disclosed everything to Shelley Meyer, Urban’s wife.

Ohio State and Coach Meyer fired Zach Smith last week after reports started to surface that Mrs. Smith had filed a domestic violence protection order against him the previous Friday and he had recently been charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

Despite Ohio State having two former head coaches on their staff, Greg Schiano and Kevin Wilson, with previous experience as head coaches at major college programs at Rutgers and Indiana, respectively, got bypassed in favor of a rising star in the profession to run the team during the investigation. Ryan Day, a 39-year-old co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who joined the program a year ago, Smith said in the university statement.
