Cavs like what they saw out of Rodney Hood in 21 games; willing to offer a qualifying offer free agent contract

The Cleveland Cavaliers made a key trade to get 6’8 shooting guard Rodney Hood in a three-team trade involving the Utah Stars and Sacramento Kings.

The trade was one of several by Cleveland that day to move out aging players and to bring in more athletic, younger players. Thus, the 25-year-old Hood.

He played well in just four months, playing in 21 games, starting 11, averaging 25.3 minutes per game, shooting .813 from the free throw line and 2.6 rebounds per game. He helped lead the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals where they lost to the Golden State Warriors for the third time in the past four years. He was inconsistent at times but showed in the Finals that he can play combining for 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Radio, TV and Sports talk shows are reporting that the Cavaliers, in preparing for next season, are going to offer Duke University product a qualifying offer to stay in Cleveland. He is one of the players that LeBron James likes playing with.

As a restricted free agent, another team can offer Hood a contract that the Cavaliers must match. If Cavs management believe that the offer doesn’t match their monetary worth of Hood, they will lose him to that team.

Management feels that a full training camp under Tyronn Lue and the rest of his teammates will benefit the left-handed shooting Hood.
