Junior College All-American Will Have Two Years Of Eligibility At Dayton

DAYTON – University of Dayton men’s basketball coach Anthony Grant has announced that Jhery Matos, a 6-foot-6 guard from Monroe College, has signed a letter of intent with the University of Dayton.  Monroe is a junior college located in the Bronx.  Matos will have two seasons eligibility at UD.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Matos was named a NJCAA Third Team All-American this season after leading Monroe to a 20-11 record and the regional championship game. He averaged 17.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his only season at Monroe.  He shot 43.1 % from the field, 35.8% from three-point range and 71.3% from the free throw line.  He was also NJCAA Region XV Player of the Year and team MVP for Monroe.

“We are very excited to announce Jhery’s signing,” Grant said.  “He is a long, athletic guard who can play multiple perimeter positions and be effective at both ends of the floor.  His international experience in the Dominican National Team program is a plus.  He will give us mature leadership, and fit in very well with our culture as well as our style of play.

“He is highly motivated to succeed and is very appreciative of the opportunity he has in front of him as a student-athlete at University of Dayton.”

The newest Flyer is from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’ capital.  He grew up in the basketball-centric Villa Juana neighborhood and played for the renowned Matos Baez club team.   In 2013, he made the decision to move to the United States to further his education and move his basketball career forward.

He attended Calusa Prep in Miami, Fla. for one year and spent one season in Orlando at West Oaks Academy.  He averaged 15.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game as senior.

After high school, he spent his freshman season at Eastern Florida State College, a junior college in Melbourne, Fla.   Matos started the first six games and hit double figures four times, but suffered an injury that caused him to miss 17 of the team’s last 19 games.  He averaged 5.3 points a game for the entire 2016-17 season at Eastern Florida before transferring to Monroe last year.

In addition to his high school and junior college experience in the states, Matos has played for the Dominican Republic’s U19 team and has trained with the national team.

Dayton was 14-17 in 2018-19.  The Flyers return four starters, including All-Atlantic 10 performer Josh Cunningham.  A two-year team captain, Cunningham led UD in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (8.4), and was fifth nationally in field goal percentage (.646, 186-288).

Matos joins fall signee Dwayne Cohill as the first two Flyer recruits for 2018-19.  Cohill scored over 2,000 points for Holy Name High School in Cleveland and was named First Team Division II All-Ohio.
