* In 1913, the Panama Canal was effectively completed as President Woodrow Wilson sent a signal from the White House by telegraph, setting off explosives that destroyed a section of the Gamboa Dike.

* In 1809, about three years after the famous Lewis and Clark expedition ended, Meriwether Lewis was found dead in a Tennessee Inn, an apparent suicide. He was 35.

* In 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in Washington, D.C.

* In 1968, Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, was launched with astronauts Wally Shirra, Donn Fulton Eisele, a Columbus, Ohio native, and R. Walter Cunningham aboard.

* In 1975, NBC Saturday Night (later Saturday Night Live) premiered with guest host George Carlin.

* In 1984, space shuttle Challenger astronaut Kathryn Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space. She later became CEO of COSI Columbus.
