Pirates rally for 3 in the 9th to down Reds, 3-1

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Andrew McCutcheon doubled down the left field line with two outs and the bases loaded to drive in three runs and rally the Pirates to a 3-1 win over the Reds on Sunday.

The Pirates have seven fewer road win than any other team, but could have easily won all three at Great American Ball Park.  The game followed the same script as the first two in the series.  The Reds gave up a lead of 3-1 after eight innings on Friday and a lead of 3-0 after seven innings on Saturday, yet won both games in their last at bat.  Closer Francisco Cordero entered the game in the ninth inning on Sunday with a 1-0 lead following masterful pitching by Johnny Cueto, but gave up a walk and two singles before giving up McCutcheon’s double with the count 1-2.  The Reds loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Chris Heisey looked at strike three from reliever Joel Hanarahan to end the game.

Cueto faced only three batters over the minimum and had only three balls leave the infield through the first six innings, and the Reds’ outfield caught all three.  The only Pirate hit in the first six innings was an infield hit by Neil Walker in the first.  Cueto worked out of a first-and-third jam in the seventh inning by striking out Ronnie Cedeno.  The Pirates’ Brian Burris was nearly as good, giving up four hits in seven innings.  In the fourth, he gave up the Reds’ only run, on back-to-back doubles by Orlando Cabrera and Joey Votto, both on pitches with the count 0-2.
