Columbus sputtering into playoffs; lose again; can win IL West Labor Day

The Columbus Clippers earlier this past week, had a five-game winning streak to clinch a postseason spot. But the past few days, the team has sputtered towards the regular-season finish line.

The Toledo Mud Hens made it three-in-a-row over Columbus with a 9-1 blowout win Sunday at Fifth Third Field in downtown Toledo.

The Mud Hens hit for the cycle as a team in the first inning, with a five-hit, five-run frame highlighted by a lead-off home run from Scott Sizemore and a three-run double from Andy Bouchie.

Columbus starter Paolo Espino (3-3) struggled to get through four innings.

Offensively, Columbus was held in check by Toledo starter Thad Weber (2-1), who didn’t allow a run until Wes Hodges led off the seventh with his 15th homer of the season.

The Clippers held on to the division lead in the International League West, as Louisville lost to Indianapolis for the second straight night. A Columbus win, or a Louisville loss will clinch the division for the Clippers on Labor Day Monday.

The regular-season finale is at 1 p.m. on Labor Day, with Columbus right-hander Corey Kluber (1-0, 1.50 ERA) going up against Toledo southpaw Ryan Ketchner (5-4, 3.87 ERA.
