Atlanta Motor Speedway is a Quad-oval with a seating capacity of 113,000. The 500.5 mile race, the Emory Healthcare 500 will be run in 325 laps.

Fireball Roberts won the first NASCAR event at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the 1960 Dixie 200.

Last year’s race was called the Pep Boys Auto 500 which featured the tracks’s first night-time Cup race, eight drivers led 17 of more laps. Kasey Kahne led the final 11 on the way to hia second win of the season. Kahne held off Kevin Harvick, who led 66 of the 325 laps. Juan Pablo Montoya, David Reutimann and Mark Martin also had top-five finishes.

Denny Hamlin is trying to shake off his mid-season slump and he showed some sign of coming out of it on Saturday by claiming the pole for the Emory Healthcare 500.

He will be followed by Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart.

Hamlin captured the eighth pole of his career and the 50th for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Hamlin has won five races this season, but it has almost three months since his last victory. He’s coming off a disappointing 34-th place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway and is fifth in the point standings and will be in The Chase which be starting at Richmond next week.

Failing to make the 43-car field were Todd Bodine, Landon Cassill, Jason Leffler and Scott Riggs.
