The Cincinnati Reds put rookie right-hander Mike Leake on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a tired pitching shoulder. The team says that he’ll be back in September.

Veteran pitcher Aaron Harang should be back some time next week from his rehab stint in Louisville.

Harang has been sidelined by back spasms since July 6. He has had no problems during his rehab pitching assignments.

The Reds have had concerns with Leake the last two months as he has appeared to be wearing down as his innings continued to pile up.

The 22-year-old Leake made the jump from Arizona State to the major leagues, winning the fifth spot in the rotation during spring training over Travis Wood. He was one of the National League’s top rookie pitchers during the first half of the season, winning five in a row while leading all NL rookies in innings pitched.

He has been non-effective in August, which the Reds immediately moved him to the bullpen to cut down his innings. But he was hit very hard in two relief outings which prompted the DL move.

Currently, Leake is 8-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 22 starts.
