Louisville Bats defeat Clippers; hold onto first place by 1.5 games

The Columbus Clippers had a chance to reclaim the IL West Division lead in Louisville Friday night, but Wilkin Castillo’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove home Danny Dorn to break a 1-1 tie and the Slugger Field crowd went home happy.

Friday’s game was a classic pitcher’s duel, where the Bats broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, with Zack Cozart’s two-out single against Columbus’ ace pitcher Carlos Carrasco, which drove home Wilkin Castillo.

Carrasco and Louisville starter Ben Jukich both threw seven innings, allowing one run each off of five hits. Carrasco struck out six, while Jukich fanned seven of the hitters he faced.

In the top of the ninth inning, Aroldis Chapman hit 104 and 105 miles-per-hour on the stadium radar gun, while striking out the side.

The Clippers fall back to 1.5 games behind Louisville in the IL West, with only 10 games to play in the regular season. Buffalo is right on the Clippers heels in the wild card race, trailing by two games.

Columbus finished the regular season with a 14-7 record versus Louisville.
