Columbus Crew defeats sloppy Colorado, 3-1 in MLS action

The Colorado Rapids were giving away August Christmas presents and the Columbus Crew were in an accepting mood.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto converted a penalty kick after a very questionable call and Jason Garey scored on a volley off an errant and sloppy clearance pass by the Rapids which helped the first-place Crew stay atop the Eastern Conference and improve to 9-0-2 in Crew Stadium this season.

The Crew are now 12-5-4, good for 40 points. The win moved Columbus to within three points of the Los Angeles Galaxy who are 14-4-4, good for 43 points in the race for the Supporters’ Shield trophy, which is awarded to the best regular-season record in Major League Soccer.

Schelotto put a 30-yard free kick toward the back post and sent the ball off the head of leaping defender Chad Marshall and toward the opposite post, where it hit off the head of Steven Lenhart and into the net before it hit the ground. That gave the Crew a two-goal lead in the 80th minute.

Second-place New York (10-7-4, 34 points) won at Toronto, 4-1 but still trails the Crew by six points in the East race. That was the first loss at home by Toronto this season.
