Reds announce roster moves involving Dennick, Smith & Villarreal

The Cincinnati Reds have made some roster moves involving their bullpen in the past few days.

On Monday, they recalled right-hander Josh Smith.

Smith, who did not get into a game after he was called up, was not on the 40-man roster prior to the promotion. By rule, the club could not have called up a player on the 40-man roster without a disabled list move until 10 days into the season, which was Wednesday, April 14. Smith, a starting pitcher was on hand to pitch in long relief if he was needed.

On Wednesday,  right-handed reliever Pedro Villarreal was recalled from Triple-A Louisville. Smith was optioned back to AAA to make room on the roster.

In another move, lefty reliever Ryan Dennick was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers. Dennick, who had an 11.57 ERA in eight games for Cincinnati last season, was designated for assignment Monday. The Reds had 10 days to trade, release or if he passed through waivers, be sent back to the minors.

Villarreal pitched in 12 games for the Reds last season with solid results. Eventhough he had a 4.30 ERA, all 11 of his inherited baserunners were stranded.

Trying to win a bullpen spot in Spring Training, Villarreal ran into some tough luck. He posted a 13.00 ERA in eight appearances, with 13 runs and 17 hits allowed, including three homers.
