Lenhart scores both goals; Crew beats Philadelphia Union, 2-1

 

The Columbus Crew received two goals from substitute Steven Lenhart and that was the difference in the Columbus Crew’s 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Thursday night.

18,001 fans were in attendance as to witness the first-ever meeting between the Crew and the expansion Union, which was televised live nationally on ESPN2.

Entering the game in the 27th minute for Jason Garey who was forced to leave due to stomach ailment, Lenhart drove home two headed shots.

Scoring on either side of halftime, Lenhart’s first strike was matched by a Sebastien Le Toux penalty kick just before the break, but the Union weren’t able to bounce back a second time. It was Lenhart’s first two-goal game in league play.

GAME NOTES

* The Crew is now 11-4-4 on the season and 3-2-4 on the road.

* Steven Lenhart’s goals were the 10th and 11th of his MLS career and his fourth this year and match his career high from 2008.

* Emilio Renteria’s assist was the first of his MLS career.

* More than 100 Crew fans made the trip to Philadelphia for the game.

* Game conditions were Cloudy and 83 degrees.

* Columbus returns to action on august 14 when it faces Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium at 9 p.m. ET in a game that will be televised live regionally on ONN-TV.
