Per league rules, Chippewas receive loss in conference standings

CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference has announced that Saturday’s women’s basketball contest between Central Michigan University and Kent State University has been canceled as Central Michigan does not have enough available student-athletes. The game will not be rescheduled.

Per Conference rule, the member institution unable to field a team will forfeit the contest. As a result, the Golden Flashes will be credited with a win, while the Chippewas will receive a loss in the conference standings. Overall records will not be impacted as per NCAA policy.

The Chippewas return to McGuirk Arena Feb. 7 to host Toledo (7 p.m. ET) for the first of three straight at home.

NOTES: WHAT’S BEHIND THE SHORTAGE OF PLAYERS:

Central Michigan at 5-14, 3-7 in MAC has struggled the entire season. Until recently with two-straight games, one notably against Miami (Ohio) on January 31 and Western Michigan last Saturday. Only seven players played in that game and they finished with six when sophomore guard Taylor Anderson injured her foot.

The Lady Chippewas program once the class of the Mid-American Conference and advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 in 2018. It has been a mystery why it has dropped to an also-ran status.

Neither Central Michigan nor the MAC gave a reason as to why the Chippewas haven’t had enough players here recently. There are 12 players listed on their roster. Could be injuries, academics or internal issues.
