Arkansas Women’s Track distance medley relay team wins first title ever

ALBUQUERQUE – The No. 7 Razorbacks continued in their record-setting ways on day one of the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships, earning the first distance medley relay title in Arkansas history.

The top-seeded distance medley relay team of Grace Heymsfield, Chrishuna Williams, Stephanie Brown and Dominique Scott made history Friday night winning the first-ever DMR title for the Razorbacks in 11:05.83. Arkansas remained steady in the middle of the pack, pacing its way through the first leg. Williams picked up the pace in the 400-meter leg, before handing off to Brown who kept the Razorbacks in second place through the 800-meter. Scott kept the pace strong and steady during the final leg, until pulling away in the final lap to cross the finish line for the historical win.

“It’s exciting to come all the way to Albuquerque and show what the Razorbacks can do,” said Scott. “We want to take every opportunity we can to show the strength of our team. We trained hard and came to the meet ready, it was then in our hands to go out there and have fun – and that’s exactly what we did.”

Brown also competed earlier in the day, as the SEC 800-meter champion represented Arkansas in the mile, finishing second-overall in Friday’s prelims with a time of 4:41.56. The time advanced Brown to the finals on Saturday.

In Friday’s record-setting pole vault field, the vaulting duo of Danielle Nowell and Ariel Voskamp just missed the 14-1.25 mark that qualified them for the NCAA Championships, both finishing the day at the 13-9.25 mark.

The women will look to continue their momentum into Saturday, as they attempt for the first NCAA Championship Title in school history.
