Arkansas golfer Cappelen, Echavarria gain All-American honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Sebastian Cappelen and freshman Nicolas Echavarria of the University of Arkansas men’s golf team each earned PING All-America honors it was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.  Cappelen was named a third-team honoree while Echavarria claimed honorable mention accolades.

The honor for Cappelen is his third in three years as a Razorback and his first third-team award after two honorable mention seasons.  Echavarria claimed his first in his first year with the program and is the 19th player in school history to be named an All-American.

Sebastian Cappelen

“I am really proud of both Sebastian and Nicolas,” Arkansas head coach Brad McMakin said.  “They both had great years and in Sebastian’s case it has been three great years.  Nicolas earned his honor by the way that he played at the NCAA Championship and has a bright future ahead of him.”

Cappelen led the Razorbacks in stroke average in 2012-13 at 72.03 and is the all-time leader in stroke average by a Razorback at 72.00.  He won the Southeastern Conference individual championship in April, just the second Razorback to ever accomplish the task, and has three tournament victories in his career.  He earned honorable mention All-America accolades as both a freshman and sophomore and is a two-time SEC Player of the Week.  Earlier this month, the Odense, Denmark, native participated in his third Palmer Cup for Team Europe.

Echavarria’s freshman season ended with a bang as he tied for 13th at the NCAA Championship in late May.  Playing in 11 tournaments, Echavarria averaged 74.84 strokes and had three top 20 finishes.  Saving his best for the end of the year, Echavarria was inserted into the Arkansas lineup for the NCAA Fayetteville Regional and posted a score of four-over par to tie for 14th.  He then carded a six-under par second round at the NCAA Championship for a total of four-under and his tie for 13th.

Arkansas’ 19 all-Americans have now earned a total of 34 honors since 1963 and over the past five years the Razorbacks have had two players named to the all-America squads four times.  Since McMakin was named head coach prior to the 2006-07 season, six different players have earned 11 honors, a total that matches the most over a seven-year span in school history.  Cappelen’s third all-American award makes him just the fourth Arkansas player to accumulate three honors in his career (Andrew Landry, Jack O’Keefe, Bud Still) and gives him an opportunity to earn four in four years next spring.
