Cristie Kerr’s lead at LPGA Championship grows to 8 after Saturday’s round

compiled from staff and wire reports

Cristie Kerr has been on a roll all season long. She’s posted three top–three finishes, including winning the State Farm Classic two weeks ago.

So there is no surprise that she is holding an eight-stroke lead after three rounds in the LPGA Championship in Pittsford, New York.

Kerr has had great focus all week and it was definitely evident during a rain-soaked round at the Locust Hill Country Club, where she went 13-under 203 entering the final round on Sunday. If she wins, it’ll be her second major title.

Kerr’s advantage tops the previous largest entering the final round of the LPGA Championship, Mickey Wright led by seven in 1961 on her way to a title.

Kerr fell just short of matching the largest 54-hole lead at an LPGA major set by Babe Zaharias, who had a 10-stroke lead at the 1954 U.S. Women’s Open.

Mika Miyazato double-bogeyed number 18 to finish at 72 and fall into a three-way tie for second with rookie Azahara Munoz and Jimin Kang after both finished with 70′s in the LPGA Tour’s second major of the year.
