LADIES PROFESSIONAL GOLF ASSOCIATION

Christie Kerr is the top American golfer in the world rankings and she is aiming higher after taking a share of the lead after the first round of the the LPGA Championship in Pittsford, New York.

Relying on her clutch putting, and not troubled by a heavy downpour that briefly stopped play Thursday afternoon, Kerr shot a 4-under-par 68 to match Stacy Lewis and Seon Hwa Lee on the Locust Country Club course near Rochester.

PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS ASSOCIATION

Justin Rose birdied five of his final six holes for a 6-under 64 and a share of the first-round lead in the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Rose, the Memorial Tournament winner three weeks ago who failed to qualify for last week’s U.S. Open, missed a 12-foot birdie putt on number 18, leaving him tied with Padraig Harrington, Charlie Wi and Matthew Googin.

Harrington birdied his first three holes and was four under at the turn.

Goggin made his run on the back nine, birdieing numbers 13, 15 and 17. Wi had four back-nine birdies.
