Defiance wins Heartland Conference; NCAA Tournament is next

March Madness has begun at Defiance College and it’s men’s basketball program as they’ve drawn Wisconsin-Whitewater in the opening round of the NCAA III National Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (23-5) earned their way to the Big Dance for the fourth time in school history by rallying to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with wins over number 6 Franklin, number 2 Hanover and number 1 Anderson. By winning the conference tournament, Defiance won the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and earned the 26th conference championship in the program’s history.

Nick Sales led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 17.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game during the three HCAC wins and was named as the 2010 Tournament MVP. He was joined on the HCAC All-Tournament Team by Anthony Brown and Logan Wolfrum.

The NCAA tournament committee selected Defiance to compete at Wooster, Ohio on the campus of  the College of Wooster. The Yellow Jackets will play the number 8 Warhawks of UW-Whitewater in the opening round on Friday. Wisconsin-Whitewater went 22-5 overall and will be making its 16th appearance into the national tournament in search of its third national championship.

HCAC Tournament Champions (DC)

Wooster (23-5) and Grove City (19-8) will play in the other game on Friday, with two opening round winners playing on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner from Saturday’s clash will the advance into the Sweet 16.
