Notre Dame leaving Big East for ACC; Football stays an Independent

To no one’s surprise, Notre Dame will be leaving the Big East Conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports but football. The ACC announced on Wednesday that the catholic university will play five football games every year against the league’s programs but will be a full member in all other sports.

The league also said that it is increasing its exit fees for the conference’s schools to three times the annual operating budget, which would be more than $50 million.

With this development, the Big East seems to be in trouble as far as a basketball conference goes.

They’ve lost Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC, and West Virginia to the Big 12, now a national brand in Notre Dame and the retirement of Jim Calhoun at Connecticut, basketball seems to have taken a hit. Only Louisville, Cincinnati, Villanova and Georgetown are left.

But the Big East has added Memphis, Temple, SMU, Houston and Central Florida. Of that group, only Memphis and Temple have strong basketball programs.
