Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, and will be lost to the National League Central Division leaders for three to four weeks.

A medical exam on Monday showed the tear and Votto had the arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday.

The Reds’ best hitter suffered the injury while sliding into third base on June 29 in San Francisco, but had continued to play without any problems.

Cincinnati general manager Walt Jocketty said that Votto did not have an MRI since that time because there was no need for one. The injury started to become reality in the last couple of days.

Votto decided to have the surgery, which only takes 20 to 30 minutes in July, so he can be ready for the “Dog Days” of August and September.

Votto said in a statement, “It is in my best interest and in the best interest of the team to do it now so that I can be healthy during the last two months of the pennant race.”

The 28-year-old Canadian is batting .342 with 14 homers and 49 RBI’s. He is the National League leader in doubles, extra-base hits, on-base percentage and walks.
