Cabrera tough on Indians; 2-run single leads Tigers to win

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is always a thorn in the side of the Indians whether Cleveland is a good team or a bad team. Since coming to the Tigers in a trade with the Florida Marlins in 2008, Cabrera has hit .331 (54 of 163) with 11 homers and 37 RBI’s in 40 games against The Tribe.

The first baseman delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, leading Detroit to a 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.

Cabrera hit a line drive off Cleveland closer Kerry Wood (0-1) and broke a 3-3 tie helping Detroit to its 10th consecutive win over the Indians. The Tigers are 18-4 in the series the last two years, outscoring Cleveland 116-79.

Justin Verlander (3-2) gave up three runs over six innings, striking out nine. A year ago, the right-hander was 4-0 with a 0.90 ERA and three games of 11 strikeouts against the Indians.

Joel Zumaya pitched two innings and Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his eighth save.

Austin Kearns drove in three runs for Cleveland, which has lost five straight and nine of 11. The Tigers, avoided their first four-game losing streak since losing five straight from September 8-12, 2009.
