Bengals re-sign key member of defense, Manny Lawson

To many fans and members of the media, the Cincinnati Bengals made a mistake letting two defensive players leave through free agency in Frostee Rucker and Jonathan Fanene. But they were part-time players on their dominating defense.

In their place, the team signed some other players through the free agency process who they feel are better.

Cincinnati did keep one of they key defensive members, linebacker Manny Lawson, who played well in the 4-3 alignment and 3-4 the team imposed.

The unrestricted free agent played in every game in 2011 with 16 starts and the Wild Card playoff game at Houston. Last season was his first with Cincinnati.

Lawson ranked fifth on last year’s defensive unit in tackles with 78 and had 1.5 sacks. He was fourth on the team in tackles-for-loss with seven.

Before playing for the Bengals, Lawson spent five years with the San Francisco 49ers.

For his 80 game career, with 71 starts, Lawson’s stats include 16 sacks, eight forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 18 passes defensed.
