The Cincinnati Bengals terminated the contract of safety Chris Crocker, making him a free agent.

Crocker, who just turned 32 in March, said that Bengals team president Mike Brown and head coach Marvin Lewis told him why they made the move, but also left the door open for a possible return later.

A graduate of Marshall University, Crocker signed a $10 million, 4-year contract on February 27, 2009. He had one-year left on the deal.

Crocker, who was drafted into the NFL by the Cleveland Browns in the 3rd round in 2003, 84th overall pick, was one of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s captains that helped Cincinnati to two playoff appearances in the past three years.

In 2010, he injured his medial collateral ligament and missed the final half of games in 2010.

He came back at full strength to play every game in 2011.

Crocker has also played for Atlanta and Miami in his NFL career.

His career stats includes, 471 tackles, 13.0 sacks and 10 interceptions.
