McNeese State senior Patrick Richard is the 2011-2012 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

A native of Carencro, Louisiana, has scored over 1,563 career points which ranks him 12th on the school’s all-time list.

Richard also has 178 career assists which is 10th best in school history.

The 6’4, 208-pound swingman leads the conference in scoring with 18.2 points per game overall and finished second in the league with 19.1 points per game during the Southland Conference games.

His 36.1 minutes per game in all games and 37.4 during league play were the most in the conference this season.

Richard also ranked among the Southland’s top 10 this year in four other categories, including free-throw percentage (sixth, .783), defensive rebounds (eighth, 4.4), assist-to-turnover ratio (ninth, 1.3) and assists (10th, 3.0).

Richard is the eighth McNeese State player to be selected as the Southland player of the year and the first since Demond Mallett in 2001. He was McNeese’s athlete of the year last year after helping the Cowboys to the conference regular-season championship and a bid to the NIT.

The defending two time team MVP the past two years, Richard has already earned a degree in mass communication and is working on a master’s degree.
