With Calvin Borel aboard, Super Saver wins Kentucky Derby

compiled from staff and wire reports

Calvin Borel as a horse jockey always does well at the Kentucky Derby.

On Saturday, guiding Super Saver through the muck, mire and mud at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky brought on by downpouring rain, settled along the rail and for the third time in four years, led a horse to the winner’s circle in one of horse racing’s biggest events.

The only horse in Super Saver’s way was Conveyance, but that ended up being no problem at all. Then Ice Box was passed up for the win of 2 1/2 length victory.

The jockey’s magic touch on his home track gave trainer Todd Pletcher his first Derby victory after 24 losses.

Borel’s ride at his home track looked very similar to the one he produced in 2009 aboard Mine That Bird.

Now it’s off to Baltimore for the Preakness on May 15. Can a Triple Crown run be in the offing?

The Triple Crown was last won 32 years ago by Affirmed. The last Derby winner to break from Super Saver’s number 4 post was 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew.

Calvin Borel is the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derbys in four years; Bill Hartack won three from 1960-1964.
