When the Cincinnati Reds acquired left-handed reliever Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs on December 23, fans and media felt they gave up too much talent just to rent a player for one year.

After all, the Reds gave up left-handed starter Travis Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt and infielder Ronald Torreyes.

In the midst of Spring Training, the Reds and Marshall are trying to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

Both Marshall and Reds general manager Walt Jocketty have confirmed the two sides are trying to come up with agreeable terms.

The 29-year-old Marshall, one of the game’s best situational leftys, is signed through 2012 for $3.1 million and can become a free agent in the off-season.

In 2011, against NL Central Division rivals Milwaukee and St. Louis, Marshall recorded an ERA of 0.00 in 15 appearances covering 16.1 innings while with the Cubs.

The 6’7 reliever has a career ERA at Great American Ball Park of 2.42 in 26 innings pitched covering 26 innings.
