THREE STARS OF GAME:

* Jeff Carter, CBJ center: Second hat trick of the season, fourth of career. He’s starting to play well since coming off injured reserve.

* R.J. Umberger, CBJ LW: Had his first Gordie Howe hat trick which is a goal, assist and a fight.

* Rick Nash, CBJ LW: Had plenty of hop-and-skip in his step with a goal and an assist.

GAME NOTES:

* The Blue Jackets revived power-play has been on fire lately. They began the season 0-for-20 and had the worst in the league. Recently, by scoring their 11th power-play goal in the past nine games, has raised their percentage to 30.8 during that time and 20th in the league.

* The Blue Jackets, believe it or not, have the 3rd-most power plays in the NHL with 228.

* The hat trick by Jeff Carter was the second scored by Columbus this season and the 21st in franchise history. It was the 12th hat trick at Nationwide Arena and the first since Matt Calvert’s three goals on February 25, 2011 vs. Phoenix.

* Columbus is 12-for-39 on the power-play for 30.8 percent, the last nine games.

* The CBJ scored the first goal of the game for the 26th time this season and are 12-10-4 in those games.

* Columbus overall vs. San Jose Sharks is 14-26-4 all-time, 11-9-2 at Nationwide Arena.

* There were 14,625 fans in attendance last night.

* Center Antoine Vermette played in his 600th game of his NHL career last night by picking up an assist on David Savard’s goal.

*Center Jeff Carter played in his 500th game of his NHL career last night. It was his second hat trick the past 17 games, the other was December 22 at Nashville.

* Goalie Steve Mason earned his eighth win of the season. It was the 85th overall win of his CBJ career, setting a franchise record for goaltender wins. He was able to achieve the honor in 206 games and broke Marc Denis’ record of 84 wins which was earned in 266 games.

Since coming off injured reserve, Jeff Carter is playing like an All-Star (megasportsnews.com photo)
