Reds acquire backup SS Valdez in trade with Phillies

The Cincinnati Reds have always known that Wilson Valdez is a smooth-fielding shortstop but they also found out that he could pitch a little bit as well.

On May 25, 2011 at Philadelphia, the Reds lost 5-4 in 19 innings to the Phillies, Valdez was moved from second base to the pitcher’s mound by his manager Charlie Manuel. He went on to pitch a one-walk, scoreless 19th inning to get the win. Before that outing, he had never pitched in a professional game.

The win by Valdez was the first for a position player in the Major Leagues since Colorado Rockies catcher Brent Mayne beat the Atlanta Braves on August 22, 2000. The last player to start a game in the field and earn a win was Babe Ruth for the New York Yankees on October 1, 1921.

The Reds now have the 33-year-old Valdez on their side.

On Wednesday, he was acquired in a trade by Cincinnati with the Phillies getting lefty reliever Jeremy Horst.

Valdez has played in 342 career games in the big leagues with the White Sox, Seattle, San Diego, the Dodgers and Phillies and has played 190 at shortstop and has a .980 fielding percentage.

The past two seasons with Philadelphia, the Dominican Republic native batted .249 with one homer and 30 RBI’s and has the nack for coming up with clutch hits in his career.

The Reds outrighted Horst off of their roster on December 5, had a 2.93 ERA in 12 major league games in several stints with the team in 2011.
