COLUMBUS, OHIO — Eventhough the Columbus Blue Jackets have played three games under interim head coach Todd Richards, there is obvious improvement in their play.

The team is passing the puck better, they seem to have more hustle in their game, the power-play and penalty-kill look rejuvenated and Rick Nash, the team’s star, is on a hot streak of four goals in four games, three with Richards on the bench.

They did lose Saturday night’s contest to the San Jose Sharks at Nationwide Arena, 2-1, but the team is playing better.

Patrick Marleau, who has been a Jackets-killer for years, scored off a rebound shot with 2:57 to play that game the Sharks the game-winner. The Sharks now have a point streak of eight games in a row, are 6-0-1 in 2012 and 6-0-2 in their past eight games.

The postgame talk in the San Jose dressing room was centered on a hard shoulder-to-the-head hit on the Sharks’ Andrew Desjardins three minutes into the second period by the Columbus’ Dane Byers. A woozy Desjardins had to be helped to the dressing room by medical personnel. Brad Winchester, San Jose’s enforcer, did not like what he saw and jumped to his teammate’s defense and fought Byers, who was given a match penalty.

Desjardins did not return to the game, but later in dressing room, he told the media that he felt better.

Ryan Clowe scored the other Sharks goal and Thomas Greiss, the goaltender, garnered 25 saves to defeat Columbus for the second time in his only starts since December 3. He beat Columbus on the West Coast on January 5.
