Rays manager Maddon named AL Manager of the Year

The Tampa Bay Rays lose good players every year through trades and free agency and they continue to win games and get into the playoffs.

There are two reasons for this. A strong farm system and a solid manager.

With that said, Joe Maddon has been named the 2011 American League Manager of the Year.

The 57-year-old Maddon won the AL award for the second time. He led the Rays to overcome a nine-game deficit to edge out the aging Boston Red Sox for the wildcat spot on the last day of the regular-season. It was the biggest deficit any MLB team had to make up in September to claim a playoff spot.

Tampa Bay, which started the season at 0-6, won its final five games to earn the playoff berth. They lost in the second round to Texas.

According to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, Maddon earned 26 of 28 first place votes for 133 points.
