NL Manager of the Year goes to Diamondbacks’ Gibson

When Kirk Gibson was a major league baseball star, all of his managers felt he would make a good coach or manager in his own right someday.

He has proven that he is a solid manager.

Gibson oversaw a worst team in the National League to first place in the NL West and the playoffs for his Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gibson was a clear choice for National League Manager of the Year honors in 2011 in his first full year as a big-league skipper.

The 54-year-old Gibson led the D-Backs to a 94-68 record. He assumed the manager’s job in midseason 2010 as Arizona went 65-97. This season, the D-Backs advanced to the playoffs, where it lost to Milwaukee in the opening round in the 10th inning.

The former Michigan State football star received 28 of 32 first-place votes for 152 points. He was the only manager in either league who was listed on every ballot of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
