Former MLB star Matty Alou dead at 72

Former major league outfielder Matty Alou is best known for his time with the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates, but he also played for the St. Louis Cardinals twice, Oakland, the Yankees and San Diego.

Matty, once part of an all-Alou outfield for the Giants with Felipe and Jesus, died late last week in the Dominican Republic at age 72 of complications from diabetes.

The Alou’s made history in 1963 as the first all-brother major league outfield with the Giants for several games.

A two-time All-Star, Alou became the 1966 National League batting champion with the Pittsburgh Pirates by hitting .342.

Overall, he was a .307 career hitter with 31 homers, 427 RBI’s, 1,777 hits and 236 doubles in 15 major league seasons.

Before his health started failing, Alou was a long-time adviser in the Giants’ baseball operations department.
