The Cincinnati Reds had to decide between keeping Brandon Phillips or Francisco Cordero and they chose to keep their popular and talented All-Star second baseman and picked up his 2012 option.

The team declined to pickup the $12 million option on their closer Francisco Cordero. However, the team says they will still try to negotiate a new contract with Cordero, who has said that he wants to remain in Cincinnati.

The lost lefty pitcher Matt Maloney, who was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins.

The Reds are trying to work on a new multi-year deal with Phillips, who batted .300 with 18 home runs, 82 RBI’s and who is stellar at second base making only six errors last season as a second-time All-Star. The two-time Gold Glove winner finished second to Neil Walker of the Pittsburgh Pirates in second baseman fielding percentage. He will make $12 million next season.

The 36-year-old Cordero ranks 12th all-time with 327 career saves, was 37 of 43 in save chances last season, notching 20 of 21 after the All-Star break. He signed a four-year, $46 million dollar deal with the Reds after the 2007 season as a free agent from Milwaukee. In four seasons he has had 34, 39, 40 and 37 saves.

Maloney became expendable because the Reds have other left-handers in the organization rated ahead of him including Bill Bray and Aroldis Chapman. He cracked a rib and was on the disabled list last season from May 29 through August 16. He made several trips from Triple-A Louisville to Cincinnati during the season. He was 0-3 with a 9.16 ERA with the Reds and 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA in 13 starts for the Bats.
