The Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team opened up their pre-season with a 92-78 win over the Walsh University Cavaliers in an exhibition game at UD Arena.

The Flyer fans had a chance to see the new uptempo offense that the team will be using under new head coach Archie Miller. The results of the new brand of basketball were excellent. UD used great ball movement to shoot 53 percent (31-58) from the field and 48 percent (11-23) from behind the 3-point arc.

Walsh is located in North Canton, Ohio, has a student enrollment of 2,500, a catholic school which was established in 1960. The school is known as being the first coaching job for current West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins.

Redshirt junior Josh Benson led Dayton with 23 points and eight rebounds. Redshirt junior Kevin Dillard scored 16 points and went 8-for-9 at the charity stripe for UD. Senior Luke Fabrizius chipped in with 12 points and senior Chris Johnson from Columbus Brookhaven put up 10 points.

The Flyers rattled the Cavaliers all night, forcing 16 turnovers which led to 26 points for Dayton.

UD open the game with a red-hot hand from the floor, going on a 7-0 run and converting on its first five shots. At one point the Flyers led 41-22 in the first half and 53-37 at intermission.

Dayton never trailed in the game, despite a strong shooting performance from Kenny Kornowski who was 10-of-16 scoring 30 points.

Nine Flyers saw at least 14 minutes of action with Dillard leading the way with 29 minutes and Johnson playing 28.
