Blue Jackets lose Wisniewski for 8 games in NHL suspension

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski has been suspended for eight games at the start of the regular-season and the remainder of the pre-season by the National Hockey League.

Wisniewski was punished for a blow to the head of Minnesota Wild player Cal Clutterbuck at the end of an exhibition game last Friday.

Columbus signed Wisniewski to a six-year, $33 million contract on July 1. And his suspension will cost him $536,585.36, the equivalent of his salary for eight games. The money goes to the NHL players emergency assistance fund.

The suspension was handed down by former player now NHL vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan.

Wisniewski’s return to the lineup will be in Nationwide Arena in October 25 against the Detroit Red Wings.

To recap the incident from last Friday, Wisniewski did not like a Clutterbuck hit on Blue Jackets teammate Fedor Tyutin in the final minute of regulation. He immediately knocked Clutterbuck to the ice and challenged him to a fight, but when Clutterbuck declined, play continued on until the clock expired.

After the game, Clutterbuck skated directly towards Wisniewski, and when the two met, Wisniewski used his elbow and shoulder into Clutterbuck’s head, sending him to the ice rather hard.
