Jocketty says Reds will bump payroll up for 2012

Eventhough the Cincinnati Reds had an up-and-down season defending their National League Central Division championship, losing it to the Milwaukee Brewers, some felt they would cut the payroll back.

No, that is what their going to do. The team still will try to win a championship.

Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said the team will in all probability increase the payroll for the 2012 season.

Cincinnati’s payroll for the 2011 season was $80.8 million, which was increased from the 2010 amount of $76.1 million. The Reds might be looking at $85 million for next season.

Jocketty said earlier this week that the Reds will pick up the $12 million option on second baseman Brandon Phillips, and they’re going to work on an extension for him.

There is a $12 million dollar option on closer Francisco Cordero. The team is likely to pick up his option as well, since there are no other closers-in-waiting to take over. Plus, there is chance they will extend his contract as well. Cordero says he likes Cincinnati and would like to retire as a Red.

Jocketty also said that this offseason might see the Reds making a trade or two to get another key piece to the puzzle.
