Hunter-Reay wins Long Beach IndyCar race; Power has gear mishap

compiled by staff, wire and IRL reports

Will Power was his usual self driving along as the pole sitter early in the race and tried to shift out of first gear to round a corner when the gear got stuck and he had to go to the pits. That mishap gave the lead to eventual winner Ryan Hunter-Reay and Justin Wilson room to take control of the race.

Ryan Hunter-Reay is the 2010 winner of the Grand Prix of Long Beach race. Hunter-Reay was the first American to win an IndyCar race at Long Beach since team owner MichealĀ  Andretti did in 2002.

Defending champion Dario Franchitti was never a factor, starting and finishing 12th.

Will Power’s consolation is that he still has the points lead headed into the oval portion of the IndyCar season, 42 points ahead of Helio Castroneves after finishing third atĀ  Long Beach.

The hottest driver on the circuit, Power has yet to finish out of the top 5 this season, winning the opening two races in Brazil and Florida, finishing fourth at Alabama. The Australian also has a streak of three straight poles, one off the IRL record. The next two races are Kansas on May 1 and the Indianapolis 500 later in the Month.
