TOLEDO-OSU RECAP: Luke Fickell escapes embarassing loss;discusses game outcome

Most of us who cover the Ohio State Buckeyes on a regular basis, were sitting in the press box during Saturday’s 27-22 win over the Toledo Rockets wandering several things aloud, on Twitter and Facebook.

What if Luke Fickell loses this game and why isn’t he playing Braxton Miller when it was obvious Joe Bauserman was struggling badly at times.

If Toledo had won that game, it would’ve been the first time in 90 years that an in-state opponent would’ve beaten the Buckeyes. Believe it or not, Oberlin won in 1921.

A loss like this would not look good when Coach Fickell and Gene Smith get together at the end of the season to decide whether he keeps the job or not.

Toledo is a good football team, but they are not Wisconsin, Miami of Florida, Nebraska or Michigan.

The first-year head coach also could not be happy with his special teams inconsistent play. Toledo blocking a punt to set up its first TD and Drew Basil missing two field goals, one that counted and one that was nullified due to a penalty.

In his postgame press conference with the media, Fickell talked about Carlos Hyde, the blocked punt, Chris Fields’ 69-yard punt return for a TD, Philly Brown, Rod Smith’s fumbling and the state of the team after two games.
