Indians get Fukudome in trade with Cubs

The Cleveland Indians have been looking for help for their short-handed outfield since the injury bug hit Grady Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo.

They have accomplished that task with the acquisition of Chicago Cubs right-fielder Kosuke Fukodome.

In exchange for the left-handed hitting outfielder, the Indians sent Class A Kinston outfielder Abner Abreau and Triple-A Columbus bullpen specialist Carlton Smith, a righty, to the Cubs. The Cubs agreed to pay the bulk of Fukudome’s 2011 salary of $4.7 million.

Fukudome, 34, is making $13.5 million this year, his last of a four-year deal with Chicago. He had a very limited no-trade clause, which listed Cleveland, but he waived it to approve the deal.

He is hitting .273 with 3 homers, 15 doubles, 13 RBI’s, a .375 on-base percentage, which ranked 14th in the National League. He has played in 87 games.

To make room for Fukudome on the 40-man roster, Travis Buck is the odd-man out. Buck has been designated for assignment which means the Indians have 10 days to trade him, release him or if he clears waivers, back to the minors.
