Valbuena’s 10th inning walk-off homer beats Bats, 6-5

COLUMBUS — Luis Valbuena hit a walk-off homer on a 3-1 pitch to leadoff the bottom of the 10th inning, to give the Columbus Clippers a 6-5 win over their IL West rivals, the Louisville Bats.

A crowd of 10,480 fans on a beautiful Saturday night at Huntington Park saw the Clippers advantage in the division move to 11.5 games.

Louisville got on the board first in the opening inning. with one out, Yonder Alonso hit long home run to the right field balcony, his 10th of the season and the Bats were up 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Clippers came back to take the lead. Ezequiel Carrera led off with a hit, Jason Kipnis single to right moving Carrera to third. Chad Huffman hit a tapper to the right of the mound and Bats pitcher Daryl Thompson threw to catcher Devin Mesoraco and it deflected off his glove allowing Carrera to score and Kipnis going all the way to third. Kipnis then scored on Valbuena’s sacrifice fly and it was 2-1 Columbus.

The lead grew to 4-1  in the second inning for the Clippers as Tim Fedroff led off with a hit and the next hitter, Matt McBride, cracked his first homer with the Clippers.

Columbus knocked out Thompson in the fifth inning when Kipnis came into score on a two out RBI single by Luis Valbuena, making 5-1 in favor of Columbus.

Just like their parent club, the Cincinnati Reds, the Louisville Bats can swing the bats, and in the sixth inning, they tied the game. Dave Sappelt and Yonder Alonso walked to begin the inning. Devin Mesoraco hit an RBI double to left field that drove in Sappelt to make the score 5-2. Jeremy Hermida belted a three-run homer off the scoreboard in right-center field to tie the game at 5-5.

The Clippers received solid bullpen work from Zach Putnam and Chen-Chang Lee.
