SPRING FOOTBALL Q & A FEATURE: Ohio State Offensive Lineman Justin Boren

Spring Football is upon us here in the Columbus, Ohio area and Buckeye fans want to know what’s going on with their offensive line.

The offensive line is a position that returns seven of the top nine players from the 2009 season, including four regular starters. Gone is 33-game multiple position starter Jim Cordle and reserve Andrew Moses. But returning are players who combined for 55 cumulative starts last season:

* LT- Mike Adams 6’8, 300, Jr., four starts in 2009.

* LT- Andrew Miller 6’6, 288, Sr., three starts in 2009.

* RG-Bryant Browning 6’4, 313, Sr., 13 starts in 2009; 26 starts in a row.

* C-Mike Brewster 6’5, 293, Jr., 13 starts in 2009; 23 consecutive starts.

* RG-Justin Boren 6’3, 320, Sr., 12 starts in 2009; 26 career starts.

* RT-J.B. Shugarts 6’7, 297, Jr., 10 starts in 2009; 10 career starts.

Justin Boren was a first-team all-Big Ten by the media last season and honorable mention as a sophomore in 2007, Brewster was on the Rimington watch list, and Browning was honorable mention all-Big Ten.

This core of lineman helped Ohio State to eight games of 200-or-more rushing yards last season, a record for a Jim Tressel-coached Ohio State team.

A look ahead to the 2010 Ohio State football season,  Marshall University will provide the opposition in the opening game of the season on September 2.

The Thundering Herd are coming off a 7-6 season, their first winning record since 2004. That record still wasn’t enough to save Mark Snyder, the former OSU defensive coordinator who resigned as head coach prior to the team’s Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl win over Ohio University.

Replacing Snyder, Marshall hired John “Doc” Holliday, who knows a little bit more about Ohio State. He was on Urban Meyer’s staff at Florida when the Gators rolled to a 41-14 win over the Buckeyes in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game.

Holliday was also recruiting coordinator for Meyer, and he has already attracted what many experts say is Marshall’s best recruiting class in years. That will help plug some holes created by the departure of such All-Conference USA performers as tight end Cody Slate, linebacker Mario Harvey and kicker Craig Ratanamorn.
