Northern Ireland native Rory McIlroy ended a memorable and record-setting week at the U.S. Open at Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland with his first major victory.

The 22-year-old played four days of mistake-free golf at Congressional Country Club ended on Sunday when he finished off a 2-under-par 69 to break U.S. Open records which is suppose to have the toughest test for all golfers.

He ended the tournament at 16-under-par.

The last 10 U.S. Open champions combined were 14 under-par.

After the tournament, Rory walked off the 18th green on Father’s Day with his dad, Gerry, who worked three jobs so that his only son could pursue his dream of being a pro golfer.

McIlroy finished at 268 to break the U.S. Open record by four shots.

This is the second straight U.S. Open title for a Northern Ireland native. Graeme McDowell won it in 2010.
